Sexual Harassment

Recently, a model working on a national TV game show filed a sexual harassment suit against the show’s producers. I’m sharing this information to remind all our readers that sexual harassment can happen to anyone in any job and at any time.

You may have been subjected to sexual harassment if you’ve been:

• Subjected to unwanted sexual attention, touching or jokes
• Pressured, or forced, to have sex to keep your job
• Exposed to pornography against your wishes
• Subjected to retaliation for complaining about sexual harassment
• Fired and/or not promoted due to pregnancy

There is no excuse for sexual harassment in the workplace. In addition to emotional pain, sexual harassment affects your home life, your relationships with family and friends, and causes you stress that no one should have to endure.

If you feel you’ve been, or currently are being, sexually harassed, I encourage you to seek legal help. I know the economy is tough and you may be afraid of losing your job, but it is unlawful to retaliate against an individual for opposing employment practices that discriminate based on sex or for filing a discrimination charge, testifying, or participating in any way in an investigation, proceeding, or litigation under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Sexual Harassment Is Also a Man’s Issue
Many think sexual harassment only happens to woman. In fact, during 2010, more than 16 percent of the more than 11,000 sexual harassment cases filed were by men. As embarrassed as you may feel, or afraid of what others may think, what’s happening to you is real, it’s wrong, and you don’t have to stand for it.

There are laws to protect victims of sexual harassment, and an attorney can help protect your legal rights and help you obtain compensation for economic losses and damages suffered as a result of:

• Mental anguish
• Retaliation
• Loss of income

Many employers have a complaint mechanism or grievance system available; if your employer does have such a system, use it.
