Graco Fined Over Car Seat Recall Delay

On March 20th 2015 Graco received a $10 million dollar fine after failing to report their car seat recall in a timely manner. The recall was issued last year, but only after Graco received pressure from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). An investigation by federal safety regulators shows that Graco received consumer complaints about the buckles as far back as 2009. Graco blamed the sticky buckles on children spilling food and liquids.

The NHTSA fine includes $3 million to the federal government, while the remaining $7 million is paid within 5 years unless it is spent on safety improvements. In response of the fine, Graco will create a plan to improve product registration, identify safety trends, and launch an awareness campaign to promote child safety.

“Today’s action uses NHTSA’s enforcement authority to not only hold a manufacturer accountable, but to keep our kids safe.”– NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind

Graco Fined: 6 Million Car Seats Recalled

The Graco car seat recall affected more than 6 million car seats. However, according to the NHTSA only 40 percent of the people who own recalled car seats got them fixed.

The recall affected the convertible car seats, booster seats, and rear facing infant car seats. The seats had buckles that could get stuck in the latched position, which could put the child in danger in the event of an accident where quick removal was needed.
